A brief comment on the sad state of British society

I was shooting the breeze with my brother-in-law the other day. Mostly stuff about computers and cars - man's talk my mother calls it, when we just couldn't resist a short social commentary on the subject of "fame" and social aspirations. We both came to the conclusion that people in general have massive gaps in their thinking with regards to what is really important in life, and that all that seems to "mean" anything nowadays is the pursuit of fame and the emulation and adoration of celebrity.

Pretty fucking shallow if you ask me and the BIL.

Lao Tzu has an opinion on this also:

44

Fame or integrity: which is more important?
Money or happiness: which is more valuable?
Success or failure: Which is more destructive?

If you look to others for fulfillment,
you will never be truly fulfilled.
If your happiness depends on money,
you will never be happy with yourself.

Be content with what you have;
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realise there is nothing lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.

The way to the world

33

Knowing others is intelligence;
knowing yourself is true wisdom.
Mastering others is strength;
Mastering yourself is true power.

If you realise that you have enough,
you are truly rich.
If you stay in the centre
and embrace death with your whole heart,
you will endure forever.

The path to freedom from oppression begins in your own mind - once you are free from your own ideas and have forgotten all knowledge learned - then you are on the way to becoming truly free.

Seek enlightenment through action-without-action - When nothing is done, then nothing is left undone.

Your greatest treasures are Simplicity, patience and compassion. With these you can conquer the world.

Peace to you and yours.

Stay Safe.
